New Owners Frequently Asked Questions

We were all new owners at one time and had a lot of questions. Some we found on our own, some other owners told us. To save you time, here's a few frequently asked questions and their answers.
Questions? Email us at tech@superxowners.com.

1. Are the turn signals self-canceling?
A. Yes.

2. How does the key work?
A. The ignition is locked when the key position is vertical. Unlocked is horizontal.  You remove the key after unlocking the switch.  In either position, you can move the indicator, but it will not energize unless the key position is horizontal.

3. Where is the oil filter?
A. It is located on the right side of the engine, down by the foot brake.  It is behind the cover.

4. It looks like there are two oil drain plugs.  Is this correct?
A. Yes. When you drain the oil, you need to remove both drain plugs.

5. How far can I go before the bike runs out of fuel when the fuel light comes on?
A. That depends on your bike.  They all seem to be different.

6. What rpm’s should I run the bike at?
A. Each Super X has it's own sweet spot.  Most are between 2800 and 3200 rpm’s. It is important not to lug the motor.

7. Can I use the left gas cap?
A. Not for fuel, it has been plugged. The fuel tank has a crossover tube, so there is no need to add fuel to each side. If the gasket goes bad on the right gas cap, replace it with the one on the left side. You cannot switch gas caps, the left one has left hand treads.

8. What is my bike number and where do I find it?
A. Your bike number is the last 4 digits of the VIN.  The VIN is on the steering head.  Most owners with bike numbers less than a thousand use the last 3 digits. To learn what the numbers and letters of the VIN mean, click here.

9. What is an IPS bike?
A. IPS stands for Initial Production Series.  If you have an IPS bike, it will have a badge on the upper triple tree clamp.

10. Why did Excelsior Henderson use a springer front forks?
A.
Springer is a term HD uses, and it is very different from E-H’s.  The HD Springer’s are a trailing link and the Excelsior-Henderson is a leading link front end.  The benefits to using a leading link front end are numerous, including anti-dive braking.  Most manufacturers use telescopic forks because they are less expensive to manufacture.

11. Where is the rear shock?
A. It is under the seat, protected from rain, dirt, and other elements that shorten shock absorber life.

12. Can I adjust the rear shock?
A.
Yes, adjust preload (spring setting) by moving the adjuster with a spanner wrench or channel lock pliers.  Adjust the damping by turning the screw to where you like it.  It moves 180° so start at either extreme and adjust it from there.

12. Do I need to change the front struts under the springs?
A.
The front struts are sealed and are maintenance free (like those on your car). If you see fluid leaking or if you feel no rebound, then you'll need to replace or rebuild them.
