Increase Oil Pressure by Adding a Shim
1.
Locate the relief spring. It is located behind the
oil pump. You will need to remove both the timing
cover and the oil pump cover.
2.
Remove the scavenge pump.
3.
Pull out shaft #3599-0061 holding the gear
#3599-0041. As you remove the gear there is two
washers located behind the gear (these have a tendency
to fall as you remove the shaft -- remember there are
two).
4.
Remove the oil pump. Remove the three screws that
hold it on. They are located in the three corners (the
other screws hold the pump together and they do not
need to be removed). The gear on the pump does not
need to come off .After you have removed the three
screws, gently pull the pump out. After the pump is
off you will see a hole with a small collar around it
-- this is where the o-ring goes. Also this is the
part that you slide out.
5.
Remove the valve. The valve is a round object that
slides in the case and is about three inches long. You
can remove it a couple ways: one is grab the collar
with a pair of pliers, but be careful not to damage
the lip or two, (the way I prefer) put a pair of
needle nose pliers in the opening and expand them
open. This will apply pressure to the inside of the
valve. Now twist and pull. It will come out with some
resistance. Once you have it out there is a snap ring
on the other end. Remove the snap ring and watch all
the parts go flying across your garage. Be careful of
that. Once the snap ring is off, remove the orifice
and the spring is behind that.
6.
Shim the spring. Put a washer just behind the snap
ring. I used 0.040" but you could go more. Or put a
larger spring in there. After this is done, reinstall
the valve. Be sure to oil the o-ring and twist it
back in, but don't force it as this could destroy the
o-ring. Now put it back together the way you took
it apart.
