Hydraulic Clutch Seal
Update: April
2008
We have been told
that this update can also be performed with an "O" ring, which
offers more crush and a much tighter seal. Update provided by
Dr. Dave Danielson. Also note that the serial number range might
be higher than listed in the original warranty bulletin.
Original:
Warranty Bulletin Number:
w99-06, June 19, 1999
Serial Range: 201-550
Symptom: Clutch slave
cylinder seal leakage, leak will show traces of fluid on the primary
cover below the slave cylinder cover.
Correction: Replace
as needed the original "quad" seal with new style
"D" ring seal. This repair can be completed without removing
the outer primary cover. Remove the clutch slave cylinder cover, loosen
and remove the outer adjuster lock nut, thread the adjuster until the
second nut is removed. Remove the slave cylinder snap ring. Using care,
slowly pump the clutch lever allowing the slave cylinder to walk out of
the slave assembly.
The original
"quad" ring will be retained by its own tension in the slave
assembly bore. Remove "quad" ring and install "D"
ring. Re-install slave cylinder and spring by (carefully) pushing into
place. Re-install snap ring with the square edge towards the thrust
load.
Fill the clutch reservoir
with DOT 5 brake fluid and bleed the clutch system. Slowly pump the
clutch lever until tight, then open bleeder to release air. Repeat
procedure until clutch response is normal.
Adjust the clutch to allow a
.010" gap between the slave piston and snap ring with the clutch
lever pulled.
NOTE: Vacuum bleeding can be
done from the lower bleed screw.
