Engine Quit Running

Here's a new one: An engine quit running while idling at a stoplight.  The battery light came on but there was plenty of cranking power and the fuses were all good. So what's up?

Here's what to check:

1) Crankshaft position sensor. It is possible that the sensor either failed or worked itself loose, possibly due to broken motor mounts. If the sensor is connected, you will want to check the resistance of the sensor. The resistance should read between 535 - 575 Ohms at 70º F, somewhat lower when cooler and somewhat higher when warmer. If the resistance reading is way off, or if you have no resistance (open), you will need to replace the crankshaft sensor. The crankshaft sensor is located on the lower front left side of the engine casing below the breather.
